What is liposuction?
Often called “lipo” by patients, liposuction is a surgical procedure that slims and reshapes specific areas of the body. It works by removing excess fat deposits, thus improving your body’s contours and proportions.
How is liposuction performed?
Liposuction uses a suction device to remove fat cells from selected areas of your body. Small, thin, blunt-tipped tubes are inserted through tiny incisions in the skin. The fat is then suctioned out through these tubes. Liposuction is a “targeted” procedure, meaning that particular areas of fat or specific fat deposits can be removed.
Liposuction is usually done as an outpatient procedure. It generally does not require an overnight stay at the hospital. In some cases, local anesthesia with an oral sedative is all that is necessary. If you are having a large amount of fatty deposits removed, general anesthesia or deep sedation may be used.
What are the different types of liposuction techniques?
In recent years, improved technology has made liposuction less painful, easier to perform and much safer for patients. Some of these new techniques include:
- Tumescent liposuction: A local anesthetic is used to numb the area of the body where the tube will be inserted. Then, a solution of epinephrine and lidocaine is injected into the fatty tissue. The fat is then removed through high power suction.
- Ultrasound-assisted liposuction: This technique uses ultrasound, which liquefies the fat making it easier to remove.
- Laser-assisted liposuction: This technique uses low-energy waves to liquefy fat before removing the fat through a small cannula.
What can I expect after liposuction treatment?
After liposuction, you will wear compression garments to maximize the retraction of the skin around the newly contoured areas, as well as to minimize swelling, bruising and pain. Dr. Soni may also prescribe antibiotics to reduce the risk of infections. You are able to return to your normal activities and work as soon as you are feeling comfortable. For most patients, this will take several days.
