Botox & Dermal Fillers

What is Botox?

Botox, also known as botulinum toxin A, is a drug made from the micro-organism that causes botulism. Botulinum toxin blocks nerve activity in the muscles, which causes temporary reduction in muscle activity.

What is Botox used to treat?

Cosmetically, Botox can remove facial wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing muscles. It is most often used on forehead lines, crow’s feet and frown lines. It can also be used to treat severe underarm sweating.

In addition, Botox can be used medically to treat certain muscular conditions, like cervical dystonia (severe spasms in the neck), muscle spasms and migraines. Eye muscle conditions, overactive bladder and incontinence are other conditions Botox can be used to treat.

Botulinum toxin is administered by diluting the powder in saline (sodium chloride) and then the solution is injected with a fine needle into the muscle. It does not require anesthesia and generally takes only a few minutes. The effects of Botox will begin in 24-72 hours. You may notice the greatest improvements within a few weeks after injections.

How long do the effects of Botox last?

The effects of Botox are temporary. Injections can last anywhere from 3-6 months, however, in some people, symptoms may return completely within 3 months after the injection. Repeating injections can lessen the time before your symptoms return, as your body develops antibodies to the toxin. Using this medication more often than prescribed will not make it more effective and may result in serious side effects.

What are the benefits of Botox?

Botox is an effective non-surgical wrinkle treatment that can give you a rejuvenated look with no downtime. There are also minimal side effects associated with Botox injections.

Is Botox covered by insurance?

Botox is not covered by insurance when it is being used for cosmetic purposes.

Dermal Fillers What are dermal fillers?

Unlike Botox, which prevents the muscle movements that cause wrinkles, injectable dermal fillers fill in the lines, creases or other facial problem areas with one of several substances. This results in a smoother and more youthful-looking facial appearance.

What are dermal fillers used to treat?

Dermal fillers can reduce the appearance of facial folds, wrinkles, loss of volume in the face and sagging underlying tissues.

Dermal fillers can also be used for non-surgical treatments, including:

  • Non-surgical rhinoplasty

  • Non-surgical chin augmentation

  • Non-surgical brow lift

  • Non-surgical lip augmentation

What are the different types of dermal fillers?

There are a number of different options for fillers. The most popular of these fillers is formulated with hyaluronic acid (e.g. Restylane, Juvederm). This is a clear gel that already exists within the human body. Hyaluronic acid is best used for treating facial lines, folds and wrinkles. Radiesse is another popular filler which delivers immediate, longer lasting results than hyaluronic acid. Radiesse is best for deep facial folds and can also be used for volume enhancement. One of the newest applications for fillers involves using Restylane to fill dark circles under the eyes. Another filler option is fat lipotransfer, which works by depositing small amounts of fat in the face, creating smooth, natural and long-lasting results. Lastly, Sculptra is a filler that can be used for patients who want to achieve subtle, long-lasting facial volume enhancement. It restores youthful fullness to the cheeks, temples and anywhere else in the face where there has been a considerable amount of volume loss.

Dermal fillers today can be categorized into several groups: superficial fillers, medium depth fillers, deep fillers and large volume fillers.

SUPERFICIAL FILLERS (FINE LINES) These fillers are for those fine lines that appear “etched” into the skin, requiring the thinnest fillers. These include:

  • Restylane Silk

  • Belotero

MEDIUM DEPTH FILLERS (MEDIUM WRINKLES) Medium thickness fillers are used for actual folds in the skin and deeper lines, such as the nasolabial folds (laugh lines), which include:

  • Restylane

  • Juvederm Ultra XC

  • Perlane

DEEP FILLERS (VOLUME LOSS) These thicker fillers are used for volume enhancement for the face:

  • Restylane Lift

  • Juvederm Ultra Plus

  • Juvederm Voluma

  • Radiesse

  • Sculptra

LARGE VOLUME FILLERS (FACIAL VOLUME ENHANCEMENT) These fillers are used for facial volume restoration:

  • Fat lipotransfer

  • Sculptra

  • Radiesse

  • Restylane Lift

  • Juvederm Voluma
