Home Sleep Study
What is a home sleep study?
A home sleep study, also known as a home sleep test, is a study that is used for the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea. Unlike traditional in-lab sleep apnea testing, it is performed at home, in the comfort of a patient’s own bed.
What do home sleep tests measure?
A home sleep study measures the following biologic parameters:
Blood oxygen saturation
In addition, the test can measure the level and intensity of your snoring as you sleep and how often you stop breathing.
How does a home sleep study work?
When a patient picks up their home sleep study equipment, he or she will receive instructions on how to turn the device on and off, how to attach everything and what to do if something disconnects during the night. The testing device is designed for patient ease and convenience and it will only take 10-15 minutes to get set up at home before you go to sleep.
After testing, you’ll turn the device off in the morning, remove everything and return it to our office. Once Dr. Soni has access to the data collected during your sleep study, he will analyze this information and make a diagnosis. Dr. Soni will then discuss the results of the home sleep test with you and explain next steps.
What are the benefits of a home sleep study?
There are many benefits associated with home sleep studies, including:
Convenience – You are able to spend the night in the comfort of your own home, in your own bed. This is especially advantageous to the elderly or people who are homebound. Additionally, most home sleep testing devices are portable, making it easy to carry around with you.
Accuracy – The natural at-home sleep environment facilitates a normal night’s sleep, which improves the accuracy of test results.
Reduced cost – The cost of a home sleep study is a fraction of the cost of an in-lab sleep study.
Accurate results – The test typically yields similar diagnostic results to an in-lab study.
Am I a candidate for a home sleep study?
Not all patients are good candidates for a sleep apnea test at home and not all insurance carriers will cover the cost of the study. If you need a sleep study, Dr. Soni will make a determination based on your specific situation about whether you should have your test done in the lab or at home.
